The Miracle of Flight
by Lana Hechtman Ayers

At the Post Office I ask for stamps
and am offered trains, desert plants, angels of love.
Does the U.S. Government sanction love?
Believe in angels?
These are Botticelli's angels—
sepia-toned cherubs,
rosy-cheeked babies,
babies with wings—
row after smiling row,
column after column of warm brown eyes,
twenty rectangles in all.
They await my wise hand
to send them heavenward on missions of grace.
Most will fly off to Manchester—
to the electric company threatening shut off
to the phone company two months late
to the credit union warning foreclosure.
One will go to Aunt Millie dying of cancer in Bronxville.
Another will be applied to the giant envelope
sporting the cunning faces of Dick Clark and Ed McMahon.

I turn to leave—
on the wall
another tableau of faces—
sheet after sheet,
stern faces with sad grey eyes—
wanted men,
men who know
that at least in this lifetime.
they will never
sprout wings
